Lancewood is also called horoeka .

The reason Lancewood has a protective layer is when moa was around they tried to eat it but it the spikes on the edge made them not eat it. But when it grew taller out of the moas reach it went into its second stage.

Lancewoods scientific name is pseudopanax crassifolius.

The colour of the juvenile leaves are dark grey brown.

The maori call lancewood horoeka.
